What is the difference between tension headaches and migraine headaches? Since both types of headaches can be extremely painful it is easy to get them confused. There are some distinguishing factors between the two types of headaches.
Location of pain: If the pain is located on both sides of the head either near the back of the head or more up by the forehead it is most likely a tension headache. If it is more one sided and located more towards the top of the head or behind the eye, then chances are it is a migraine headache.
Visual disturbances: Migraines are more often associated with a visual aura and nausea however, not all migraines are accompanied with these symptoms. Occasionally you can get a visual aura and nausea with tension headaches, but that is the exception to the rule. Many times migraine headaches are triggered by certain foods or smells whereas tension headaches are not.
